Coral Reefs in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Coral reefs in India are among the oldest and most ecologically rich ecosystems. India has a long coastline of about 11,098.81 kilometres, including its islands. Coral reefs are mainly found in five major regions: the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, the Gulf of Mannar, the Gulf of Kutch, and the Palk Strait. Most coral reefs in India are fringing reefs. However, the reefs in Lakshadweep are atolls, which makes them unique. Moreover, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have the largest coral reef system in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coral reefs support a wide range of marine biodiversity<\/strong>. In addition, they protect coastlines from erosion and strong waves. Coral reefs are underwater structures made of calcium carbonate. Tiny marine animals called coral polyps build them. These polyps live in colonies and secrete calcium carbonate skeletons. Over thousands of years, these skeletons accumulate and form large reef structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coral reefs cover less than 1 percent of the ocean floor. However, they support nearly 25 percent of all marine species. This makes them one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. They are therefore called the ‘rainforests of the sea.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Types of Coral Reefs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Scientists classify coral reefs into three main types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where Can Coral Reefs Be Found in India?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Coral reefs are found in five major regions in India. Each region has distinct ecological characteristics. Let us examine each one carefully:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Andaman and Nicobar Islands – Largest Coral Reef in India<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands host the largest coral reef system in India. They sit in the Bay of Bengal. The islands have about 572 islands, most with fringing reefs. These reefs have a very high biodiversity. The reefs here are exclusively fringing reefs. The warm, clear waters of the Bay of Bengal support a wide variety of coral species and associated marine life. The Andaman and Nicobar reef system is the richest and most extensive in the entire country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Lakshadweep Islands – India’s Only Atolls<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lakshadweep consists of 36 coral islands, of which 10 are inhabited. These islands are exclusively coral atolls. An atoll is a ring-shaped coral reef enclosing a central lagoon. The islands range from less than 1 kilometre to about 9 kilometres in length. They do not exceed 2 kilometres in width. The Lakshadweep atolls are the only atolls in India. They lie in the Arabian Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Gulf of Mannar<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Gulf of Mannar lies between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. It has fringing reefs along a chain of 21 islands. These islands extend from Rameswaram in the north to Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) in the south. The Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve protects this reef system. It is also a Ramsar site and a Marine National Park. The Gulf of Mannar reefs support dugongs, sea turtles, and many other marine species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Gulf of Kutch<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Gulf of Kutch lies in Gujarat on India’s western coast. Its coral reefs are exclusively fringing reefs. However, these reefs are less developed compared to other Indian reef systems. This happens because of the large range of temperature and high salinity in the Gulf of Kutch. The entire Gulf of Kutch is a Marine National Park. Despite being less diverse, these reefs are ecologically important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Palk Strait<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Palk Strait lies between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. It has fringing reefs along its length. The Palk Strait shares its reef system with the Gulf of Mannar biosphere zone. Hermatypic corals (reef-building corals) are present along the sea shore from Kollam in Kerala to Enayam Puthenthurai in Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
