This policy asserted that the East India Company held supreme authority over Indian states.

Under this policy, the British claimed the right to intervene in the affairs of princely states whenever they believed Company interests were affected.

It reduced the political independence of Indian rulers, even when the British did not directly annex their territories.

The policy helped the Company justify greater control over neighbouring states after defeating major powers such as the Marathas.

Therefore, the Policy of Paramountcy marked a shift from limited alliances to a stronger claim of British political supremacy in India.

Doctrine of Lapse under Lord Dalhousie

Lord Dalhousie applied the Doctrine of Lapse between 1848 and 1856 to expand British control over princely states.

Under this policy, the British could annex a dependent state if its ruler died without a natural male heir and the Company refused to recognise an adopted heir.

Important states annexed under the doctrine included Satara (1848), Sambalpur (1850), Nagpur (1853) and Jhansi (1854).

The policy deeply angered Indian rulers because it challenged the traditional right of adoption and weakened princely authority.

Consequently, the Doctrine of Lapse became one of the major political causes of resentment before the Revolt of 1857.

British Conquest of India and Assam Connection

The Assam connection makes this topic particularly important for APSC.

The First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-1826) ended with the Treaty of Yandabo on 24 February 1826. Under the treaty, Burma relinquished its claims and future interference in Assam.

Subsequently, British control expanded over Assam. Assam government records identify 1826 as the beginning of British rule in the region.

The treaty therefore marks a major dividing line between the late Ahom-Burmese phase and colonial administration in Assam.

Why Did the British Conquest of India Succeed?

The decline of the Mughal Empire created political fragmentation and allowed the British to intervene in conflicts among regional powers.

Rivalries among states such as the Marathas, Mysore, Hyderabad and Bengal prevented Indian rulers from building a united front against the Company.

The East India Company maintained a disciplined and professionally trained army and increasingly recruited Indian sepoys under British officers.

After gaining the Diwani rights of Bengal in 1765, the Company used Bengal’s rich revenues to finance wars, maintain troops and expand further.

The British used diplomacy and intelligence effectively. For example, they exploited internal divisions at the Battle of Plassey (1757) and secured support from local allies.

Moreover, the Company used Subsidiary Alliances and indirect control to weaken Indian rulers without always fighting direct wars.

British naval strength and control over major coastal centres helped protect trade routes, move troops and maintain communication with Europe.

Therefore, the British succeeded because they combined military organisation, financial strength, diplomacy, political manipulation and alliances more effectively than their rivals.

Conclusion

The British Conquest of India evolved from commercial penetration into political domination through a carefully combined strategy. This strategy was a combination of battles, revenue control, diplomacy, alliances and annexation doctrines. Plassey and Buxar established the foundation, while victories over Mysore, the Marathas and Sikhs removed major rivals.

At the same time, policies such as the Subsidiary Alliance, Paramountcy and Doctrine of Lapse steadily reduced the sovereignty of Indian states. For UPSC and APSC, understanding this chronology also explains why political resentment accumulated and eventually contributed to the Revolt of 1857.

UPSC/APSC Mains Practice Question

Trace the major stages of the British conquest of India from the Battle of Plassey to the annexation policies of Lord Dalhousie.
