Why in the News?

• The Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) to produce SJ-100 civil aircraft in India.
• It will be the country’s first domestic passenger aircraft manufacturing project in nearly four decades.
• Under the MoU, HAL will have the right to manufacture SJ-100 Civil aircraft for domestic customers.
• This will be the first time that a complete passenger aircraft will be manufactured in India. 
• The last such project carried out in India was HAL’s production of AVRO HS748, which started in 1961 and ended in 1988.

• The Defence Minister of India termed the signing of this MoU as a landmark step for the Indian Civil Aviation sector.

About SJ-100 and its uses:

• The SJ-100, developed by Russia, is a twin-engine, narrow-body passenger aircraft.
• The aircraft is primarily used for commercial purposes.
• The United Aircraft Corporation has manufactured over 200 such aircraft.
• These aircraft are used by 16 commercial airline operators.
