  • Legal Framework:
    • Governed under Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999.
    • Came into force in 2003.
    • Administered by GI Registry, Chennai and the Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade (DPIIT).

International Basis of GI Tag:

  • GI is recognized under WTO – TRIPS Agreement (1995).
  • TRIPS defines GI and mandates protection for:

    • Manufactured items
