Part B-Main Examination:

The level of the General English and General Knowledge papers will be suitable for candidates from a Science or Engineering background at the Indian university level. For optional subjects, the syllabus will generally be of honours degree level. This means it will be slightly higher than a normal bachelor’s degree but not as advanced as a master’s degree.

However, for engineering optional subjects, the level will be similar to a bachelor’s degree. Also, candidates should note that there will be no practical examination in any subject.

In the Indian Forest Service Syllabus 2026, General English tests writing skill, comprehension, and clear expression.

General English (Paper I): In the Indian Forest Service Syllabus 2026, General English tests writing skills, comprehension, and clear expression.

  • In the General English paper, candidates have to write an essay in English. Apart from this, the paper includes questions that check how well they understand the language and how clearly they can use words. Candidates may also get passages for summary writing or precis writing, where they need to express the main idea in a short and clear way

The Indian Forest Service Syllabus 2026 also gives importance to General Knowledge, current events, polity, history, and geography.

General Knowledge (Paper II):

  • The General Knowledge paper tests a candidate’s awareness of current events and common things seen in everyday life. It also checks whether the candidate can understand the scientific side of daily observations. The questions are framed at a level that an educated person should be able to answer, even without special study of any particular science subject.
  • The paper also covers basic questions from Indian Polity, the political system, the Constitution of India, Indian History, and Geography. These questions are usually framed at a general awareness level. A candidate should be able to answer them with regular preparation and basic understanding, without needing any deep or specialised study.
