India’s Panchamrit Strategies, unveiled at COP26, underscore the nation’s commitment to climate change mitigation and sustainable development. With the ambitious goal of achieving 500 GW non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030, states have a crucial role in aligning their renewable energy initiatives with central government schemes while leveraging local resources.
India’s ‘Panchamrit Strategies’
500 GW Non-Fossil Fuel Energy Capacity by 2030.
50% Energy from Renewable Sources by 2030.
45% Reduction in Carbon Intensity of GDP by 2030 (from 2005 levels).
Reduction of 1 Billion Tonnes of Carbon Emissions by 2030.
Achieving Net-Zero Emissions by 2070.
State Strategies to Contribute to the 500 GW Target
Implementation of Assam State Renewable Energy Policy 2022
The policy focuses on creating an enabling ecosystem for the growth of renewable energy, particularly in solar, wind, and bioenergy.
It emphasizes decentralized renewable energy solutions and public-private partnerships to drive investments in the sector.
Promotion of Solar Energy Projects
Assam has mandated rooftop solar installations on all new private and public buildings.
The state has also developed the Northeast’s first floating solar power plant, setting a benchmark for innovative renewable energy projects.
Development of Bioenergy Infrastructure
The government is promoting compressed biogas by collaborating with private firms to create an integrated biogas production and distribution network.
This initiative also addresses agricultural waste management and reduces reliance on fossil fuels.
Enhancement of Renewable Energy Capacity
Assam has significantly increased its share of renewable energy in its energy mix and aims to achieve over 74% renewable energy capacity by 2030.
Expansion includes large-scale solar parks and wind power projects in energy-suitable areas.
Attraction of Investments in Green Power Projects
The state is actively attracting investments in green energy through approvals of large solar projects like the 25 MW Namrup Solar Power Plant.
Dedicated zones for renewable energy development are being established to streamline project execution.
Collaboration on Solar and Storage Technologies
International partnerships and funding support are being utilized to develop large-scale solar power and advanced battery storage systems in regions like Karbi Anglong, addressing energy reliability challenges.
Assam’s focused efforts in renewable energy policy implementation, solar energy development, bioenergy infrastructure, and investment attraction position it as a key contributor to India’s 500 GW non-fossil fuel energy capacity target. With its strategies, Assam is fostering sustainable growth while supporting India’s broader climate commitments under the Panchamrit Strategies.
