These principles guide India’s approach to diplomacy, technology sharing, environmental action, and humanitarian assistance, positioning the country as a responsible global leader. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked, “India is seen as a combination of openness, opportunities, and options,” capturing India’s unique blend of traditional values and modern innovation.
1. Promotion of Peace and Non-Violence
- India’s commitment to non-violence and peace resonates deeply in its foreign policy. As one of the largest contributors to UN Peacekeeping Missions, India has deployed over 250,000 troops in 49 missions, emphasizing its dedication to global peace and stability. India’s peaceful approach, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of Satyagraha, promotes diplomatic dialogue in resolving conflicts, as seen in India’s role in mediating recent issues in the Indo-Pacific and advocating for peace in Ukraine.
2. Unity in Diversity and Pluralism
- India’s multi-religious, multi-lingual society exemplifies harmony in diversity, inspiring the global community at a time of increasing polarization. This ethos is reflected in India’s International Day of Yoga initiative, celebrated by over 190 countries, uniting millions globally in a shared practice of physical and mental well-being. India’s model of pluralism also informs its advocacy for inclusive development policies at international forums, particularly for minority and marginalized groups.
3. Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action
- India’s commitment to environmental sustainability is guided by the principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family), recognizing that global well-being relies on collective action. India co-founded the International Solar Alliance (ISA), bringing together over 120 countries to promote solar energy, with a focus on supporting developing nations. Domestically, India has set ambitious renewable energy targets of 500 GW by 2030 and is a leader in green energy. Through the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) initiative, India encourages sustainable practices and behavior change globally, targeting issues like single-use plastics and responsible consumption.
4. Humanitarian Assistance and Development Partnerships
- India’s ethos of “Seva” (service) drives its extensive humanitarian and developmental outreach. During the COVID-19 pandemic, India’s Vaccine Maitri initiative supplied over 200 million vaccine doses to 100 countries, prioritizing low- and middle-income nations, exemplifying its commitment to global health equity. India’s development assistance spans Asia, Africa, and Latin America, with projects in education, healthcare, and digital infrastructure through partnerships like India-Africa Forum Summit and Asia-Africa Growth Corridor.
5. Digital and Knowledge Sharing
- India’s advancements in digital public infrastructure, like Aadhaar and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), have created models for digital governance and financial inclusion that are being shared with other countries. UPI, with over 10 billion transactions monthly, has gained global traction, with countries like Singapore and UAE adopting it for their own digital ecosystems. India’s digital model, rooted in accessibility and affordability, provides a template for reducing the digital divide and advancing socio-economic progress worldwide.
6. Championing Global South Interests
- India has consistently advocated for the interests of the Global South in international institutions, particularly on issues of economic justice, debt relief, and climate finance. During its G20 presidency in 2023, India emphasized amplifying developing nations’ voices on debt sustainability and fair climate financing. As part of South-South Cooperation, India contributes to global development projects in health, education, and infrastructure, promoting equitable growth.
India’s contributions, from peacebuilding to climate action, reflect an enduring commitment to global harmony, equity, and shared prosperity. Combining ancient values with modern solutions, India offers a holistic approach to addressing global challenges. Through initiatives rooted in non-violence, inclusivity, and sustainability, India is shaping a cooperative, resilient, and just world order, reinforcing its role as a responsible leader in an increasingly interconnected world.
