What are the Major Functions of UPSC?

The UPSC Exam is only one part of the Union Public Service Commission’s work. UPSC has a much wider role in India’s recruitment system. It helps the Government of India select capable candidates for different civil services and posts. Here are the major functions of UPSC in simple points:

Many serious aspirants choose UPSC coaching in north east India to strengthen their preparation through expert guidance.

Conducting examinations for Union services: UPSC conducts national-level exams for appointment to different services under the Union Government. These include exams like the Civil Services Examination, the Engineering Services Examination, the Combined Defence Services Examination, the NDA Examination, the Indian Forest Service Examination, and others.

Direct recruitment through interviews:  UPSC also conducts direct recruitment for some posts through interviews. In such cases, candidates are selected based on qualifications, experience, shortlisting criteria, and interview performance.

Appointment through promotion, deputation, and absorption: UPSC plays a role in the appointment of officers through promotion, deputation, and absorption. This helps the government fill higher-level posts through proper service rules.

Advising on disciplinary matters: UPSC also advises the government in disciplinary cases related to different civil services. This makes the process more structured and rule-based.

Advising the Government of India: UPSC advises the government on any matter referred to it by the President of India. This advisory role makes UPSC an important constitutional body in India’s administrative system.
