UPSC Prelims Previous Year Question Papers PDF

The UPSC preliminary examination consists of two papers—General Studies (GS) Paper I and the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). Both papers are of objective (MCQ) type. Below, you can download the last 10 years of preliminary exam papers in PDF format.

About UPSC Prelims GS Paper I

GS Paper I covers Indian and World History, Indian and World Geography, Indian Polity and Governance, Economy, Environment and Ecology, and Current Events. Analysing PYQs reveals that approximately 15-20 questions per year come from Environment and Polity alone, making these areas critical for aspirants.

About UPSC Prelims CSAT (GS Paper II)

CSAT tests reading comprehension, logical reasoning, data interpretation, and basic numeracy. Since 2015, CSAT is qualifying in nature (a minimum of 33% is required). However, it is important not to neglect it. Practising PYQs ensures you are well within the qualifying mark and confident on exam day.

UPSC Mains Previous Year Question Papers PDF

The UPSC Mains Examination consists of nine papers, of which seven are merit-based. The four General Studies papers (GS I, II, III, and IV) are the most important. Download year-wise Mains GS question papers below.

What Does Each GS Paper Cover?

GS Paper I: Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society.

GS Paper II: Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations.

GS Paper III: Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management.

GS Paper IV: Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude — includes theory, case studies, and application-based questions.

Studying Mains PYQs helps you understand the depth of analysis expected, the inter-disciplinary nature of questions, and the art of linking current affairs with static topics.
