Exam Pattern & Syllabus
On balance, the APSC CCE consists of two successive stages: the Preliminary Examination (screening) and the Main Examination (final selection).
Preliminary Examination
Usually, the preliminary exam includes two papers—General Studies I and II—with objective-type questions. It serves as a screening test for the Mains examination
| Paper | Subject | Marks | Duration | Type |
| Paper I | General Studies – I | 200 | 2 Hours | Objective MCQ |
| Paper II ** | General Studies – II (CSAT) | 200 | 2 Hours | Objective MCQ (Qualifying) |
| Total | 400 |
Key things to know about the Prelim:
- Paper II is qualifying only — you need just 33% to clear it. Your Paper II score does NOT go into the merit list.
- Negative marking applies on Paper I — one-fourth of the question’s marks are deducted for wrong answers.
- The Prelim is a pure screening test — scores are not counted in your final ranking.
- Accordingly, candidates qualifying the Prelim are shortlisted for the Mains at 11–12 times the number of vacancies per category.
Main Examination (Written + Interview)
The Mains exam consists of six descriptive papers, including the Essay and General Studies papers. Candidates who qualify are called for the interview round.
| Sl. | Paper | Type | Marks | Duration |
| 1 | Paper 1 | Essay | 250 | 3 Hours |
| 2 | Papers 2 to 6 | General Studies (Conventional Essay) | 250 each (x5 = 1,250) | 3 Hours each |
| 3 | Interview / Personality Test | After qualifying written exam | 180 | — |
| Grand Total | 1,680 |
- Number of candidates for Mains Written = 11 to 12 times the number of vacancies per category
- Candidates for Interview = in the ratio of 1:3 to the number of advertised vacancies
- Answer papers may be written in English or Assamese
- Final ranking is based on Written Examination + Interview/Personality Test marks combined
- Allotment of posts is based on Merit cum Preference expressed by candidates
| “The Interview is not a cross-examination — it is a purposive conversation intended to reveal the mental qualities of the candidate.” |
Examination Centres
The Preliminary Examination will be held across 35+ centres all over Assam, including Guwahati, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Barpeta, Nagaon, Tezpur, Kokrajhar, Haflong, North Lakhimpur, and many more.
The Main Examination, however, will be conducted at Guwahati only. If you are based in a remote district, plan your logistics well in advance.

Preparation Tips for APSC CCE 2025
Prelims Paper I Strategy
Significantly, the core of your APSC CCE preparation begins with General Studies Paper I, which carries the most weight in clearing the Prelims stage. Accordingly, focus on building strong conceptual clarity in subjects like history, geography, polity, economy, science, and current affairs. Moreover, give special attention to Assam-specific topics—its history, geography, polity, culture, and current developments—as this area often provides a decisive edge. Particularly, rely on NCERT books for fundamentals, supplement them with Assam-focused resources, and stay consistent with newspaper reading to strengthen your preparation.
Prelims Paper II (CSAT) Approach
Prelims Paper II is qualifying in nature, requiring only 33% marks, so your approach should be smart and balanced. Hence, Focus on basic comprehension, reasoning, and aptitude through previous year papers. Accordingly, avoid over-investing time in this paper at the cost of Paper I, as your primary goal here is simply to clear the cut-off. Consistent but limited practice will ensure you remain confident without diverting attention from other scoring areas.
Mains Preparation Strategy
In the first place, the main stage requires a shift towards analytical thinking and structured answer writing. However, regular practice of essay writing will help you develop clarity, coherence, and the ability to present balanced arguments on contemporary issues. Further, for General Studies Papers (2–6), focus on an in-depth understanding aligned with the APSC Amendment Rules 2019 syllabus, and practice previous year questions to refine your writing skills. Maintaining a dedicated current affairs log covering Assam, Northeast India, and national issues for at least the past 12 months will significantly strengthen both your answers and overall awareness.
Interview and Final Preparation Tips
As a matter of fact, the Interview stage assesses your personality, awareness, and suitability for administrative roles. So, engage in mock interviews, refine your communication skills, and build a clear career narrative. Stay updated on Assam-specific as well as national issues to demonstrate informed perspectives. During Prelims, be mindful of negative marking in Paper I—avoid blind guessing and attempt only those questions you are reasonably confident about. Accordingly, a disciplined, state-focused approach combined with smart strategy and consistency will greatly enhance your chances of success.
Conclusion
At last, the release of the APSC CCE 2025 notification marks the beginning of a crucial opportunity for aspirants aiming to enter Assam’s civil services. Furthermore, beyond being just a competitive exam, it serves as a gateway to influential roles in administration, governance, and public service. With a rigorous three-stage selection process—Prelims, Mains, and Interview—the examination is designed to assess not only knowledge but also analytical ability, decision-making skills, and overall personality required for administrative responsibilities.
Indeed, for candidates, this is the ideal time to adopt a focused and strategic preparation approach by aligning with the latest syllabus, practicing previous year questions, and staying consistent with current affairs. Moreover, success in APSC CCE demands discipline, patience, and continuous revision along with strong conceptual clarity. Ultimately, clearing this examination is not just about securing a position but about embracing the responsibility to contribute meaningfully to society and play a vital role in the development of Assam.
